Sample of Station Square is one of the WPA Humane Society’s biggest events of the year. People buy passports which they can get stamped that entitles them to sample the food of each of the restauarants at Station Square, and also enter into a raffle for a grand prize. Volunteers are needed to handle the animals, to punch passports, and to assist however needed. My assignment was as dog handler for PEANUT, a 8 yr old male Lhasa Apso.

Exploration

My aloe juice

My aloe juice

I was exploring Carolyne Mistake’s blog and catching up on her latest exploits, when I read about aloe juice. The next day I was in Lotus Foods, one of the Asian grocery stores in the Strip District. I was in the checkout line with some dried cod with chili spice when I looked to my right and saw bottles of aloe juice. Well,  I had to give it a try. My verdict is that it is very tasty. It is citrusy-sweet and tastes very refreshing. There were pieces (like puply stuff) in it some, but they were really smooth, like the texture of tapioca bubbles, but shaped differently.

Marko in the rose bush

Marko in the rose bush

Marko has been enjoying exploring the outdoors. We take him with us out in the backyard and sometimes out front. We also got him a harness and bungee leash so we can take him further away with us. When we are outside he likes to stalk and hunt bugs and birds and sometimes, just lay in the shade or in the sun.

I took my friend Heather to the Humane Society so she could explore her options as a volunteer. She signed up for the dog walking and bunny buddy training and I signed up for bunny buddy and cat cuddler training. Then she came with me when I walked a dog, London. London was very submissive. He walked past the other dog cages with his head down and ears back. Once we got outside, he was so happy to walk. He was playful, affectionate, and loved the treats. He is really skinny, but I’m sure he’ll put on weight swiftly.

It's My Life

In Uncategorized on July 6, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Hello again, and welcome back to the continuing adventures of me. Glad you could come on this journey with me. Let’s see what I have for you today. Well, first of all, a picture of my panther, Marko, and his sharp baby teeth!

Pantera

Pantera

Awww isn’t he just ferocious? Or maybe just sleepy, who can say…

Marko has discovered that dropping his toy mouse on my head from the ledge over the bed is an effective way to wake me up in the morning. Haha. As long as it’s not a real mouse, were okay.

Today I went shopping in the strip a bit. I’ve been going to Labad’s, which is a store run by two Syrian brothers. Today I got Bulgarian feta, bulgar wheat, and sour cabbage leaves. Rado is going to make stuffed cabbage leaves. It’s like stuffed grape leaves, only better.

I went to Petco to get a bungee leash to walk Marko, I’ll let you know how that progresses. He’s still getting used to having the harness on for a little bit at a time.

Today I walked two dogs at the humane society, Candy and Moose. Candy was really slender, but I have a feeling she’ll put on some more weight quickly, because she loved the treats! She was a little shy and reserved, but very well behaved and stayed close to me the whole walk. Moose is a rottweiler mixed with something with longer fur. He is a big lap dog. I sat down on a bench and he immediately hopped up into my lap. All four legs. I’d say he weighed at least 55 pounds. He was so affectionate though, it was nice to have him on my lap for a little while. I can’t find his info up on the WPA Humane site- will check again later. John Elliff, if you read this, I thought of you and your late Moose when I had him out today.

Long Time No Blog

In Uncategorized on July 4, 2009 at 12:40 pm

I haven’t been posting here in a while, so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. In the interest of preventing a long rambling entry, I will try to summarize what I have been up to and if any of them strike you, I can go more in depth on the subject. I will start from this morning and then work my way through the month of June.

4 July 2009

The WPA Humane Society shelter was open from 9-11 today for volunteers only since it’s Independence Day, so I went to walk some dogs. The shelter has been slammed with surrenders recently, so they are really full. If you are thinking of fostering or adopting, now is the time. I walked two dogs. I walked a puppy named Ashley and a big boy named Sunny.

Ashley

Ashley

ASHLEY - ID#A106689

  • Sex: spayed female
  • Breed: Pit Bull Terrier.
  • Age: 3 months old.
  • Weight: 14 pounds.

Ashley is a sweet puppy, full of puppy energy, but also very affectionate. She stayed by my legs almost the whole walk, and she loved to give kisses and sit on my lap.

Sunny

Sunny

SUNNY - ID#A107037

  • Sex: neutered male
  • Breed: Pit Bull Terrier.
  • Age: @ 1 year and 1 month old.
  • Weight: 59 pounds.

Sunny has a name that suits him because he definitely has a sunny disposition. He has had a rough life and was found tied to a park bench for a couple days. But he is so friendly and full of joy now, let him bring some sunshine into your life!

Out of some of the dogs I’ve walked, Buddy, Hercules, and Dreamcicle have all been recently adopted! I have gone on two off site events with the shelter, one to Bark in the Park in Mt Washington, and one to Lucky Paws Pet Resort in Freedom, PA.

June 1-2

We adopted a kitten from the WPA Humane Society. I came to walk dogs and it was feeding time, so I went in to visit the cats while I was waiting. The whole time I was in there, one kitten would not stop meowing the whole time except when I was at his cage. He also kept reaching his paws out thru the bars and knocked his sign off. Later that day, I brought Rado back to see him and it was love at first sight. I really think the cat picked us. His original name was Oreo, but we changed it to Marko Meowii. Oreo is still his middle name I guess. We named him Marko because our adoption counselor was named Mark and because of the Bulgarian folk hero Krali Marko. Meowii because of how vocal he is and how he made our hearts melt. We did the paperwork June 1st, but he had to be neutered still, so we got to pick him up the afternoon of June 2nd. He is a joy to have in our lives. Marko has his own blog at http://markomeow.wordpress.com

June 18th

I started a Calligraphy class today at CCAC. It is a non-credit community education course. I love it! I had been exposed to calligraphy in 7th grade and liked it then, but had no idea how many different calligraphy alphabets there are. So far we have learned Italic, and two kinds of Versals. Next week we are doing the Celtic alphabet. It is a lot of fun and I hope to incorporate it into my poetry and make my  poetry as much a visual art as a literary art.

June 22nd

I have started playing tennis. Surprisingly I am not atrociously terrible at it. Rado and I have been playing in the park and we are both learning, so we don’t get a lot of volley back and forth, but are happy when we hit it. We have my parents rackets, which everyone who saw them had to comment on how old they were. They are heavy wooden rackets probably from the late 70s, early 80s. They still work just fine, thank you. They are both WIlson rackets, one “Chris Evert Personal” and the other “Stan Smith Pro Cup” Rado bought me a more lightweight racket at a church yard sale down the street. It works pretty good too. It’s titanium and is a Wilson Rak Attack Jr.

June 23-25

Went to Ohio to help my brother with the dogs. Took Akira in my Dad’s car to the park, and walked Shiro around the neighborhood.

June 27th

We had dinner at the neighbors across the street. It was a very international dinner with one of our hosts being from France, and of the guests a couple- one from France, one from Italy- and a couple from Senegal. Rado played his accordion and everyone danced or played maracas and clapped. It was really fun. We hope to have more evenings like that.

June 28th

We had some people over to watch the Confederation Cup Final- U.S.A vs Brazil. U.S.A dominated in the first half, but Brazil recovered in the second half and overtook the U.S. 3-2. I was very impressed with how good the U.S. team is getting. Our goalie is especially superb. I hope it makes soccer/(football to the rest of the world) more popular here.

Random: Other than that, I’ve been working a lot, riding my bike, playing with Marko, playing with my Burmese nephews, trying to blog at my new funk music blog http://trufunksoulja.wordpress.com , sketching and drawing more, writing, reading, and trying to enjoy life. Until next time,

Excelsior!

Kimbo & Dreamy

In Dog Walking, Uncategorized on May 29, 2009 at 5:14 pm

Today I walked Kimbo and Dreamcicle. Dreamcicle is still a bit shy and doesn’t want to go on long walks. She is a beautiful girl and just needs somebody to love her. She did take a cookie and ate part of it. Again, she doesn’t really stop moving long enough to pause for photos! Haha. I think Dreamcicle was not as scared of people when she shared a run with King. She would probably get along well in a family with older children and other dogs.

Walked a new guy today, Kimbo. I kept wanting to call him Kimbo Slice after the internet street fighter. He was a lover, not a fighter, though. Kimbo was very affectionate and wanted to be close to me. He looked very patriotic with his American flag bandanna.

2-day Summary

In Uncategorized on May 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Yesterday Rado and I walked two dogs, Kodi and Star. Kodi was a great dog, though a bit vocal. He was very alert, and attentive. Star is only allowed out for potty breaks for now, because she has had heartworms. She was so sweet and a little shy.

Mercedes

Mercedes

Today I walked Mercedes, who you’ve met, and we practiced her obedience commands, and ran a little, and then I walked Ceasar. Ceasar was so playful. He wore himself out playing in the sun, so he sought out the shade under a parked trailer. He rolled over for me to rub his belly a lot. He knows his “sit” and “down” commands, as well.

Shelter Update

In Uncategorized on May 19, 2009 at 10:32 pm

King was adopted first thing this morning. I found out when I went to walk dogs this evening and Dreamcicle was all alone again. So I asked to make sure he wasn’t sick in isolation or fostered out, and he was adopted by a family this morning. I LOVE YOU KING! and I wish you and your new family all the best.

Dreamcicle

Dreamcicle

So since Dreamcicle was all by herself again, I walked her. We went on a longer walk than usual for her, and then she spent time smelling the area around the shelter.

buddydwn1Buddy and I went for a walk next, and we jogged for a little bit as part of our weight loss program. Buddy needs to lose a few pounds (don’t we all). We went way further than Buddy and I have ever gone, because usually he is preoccupied with smelling everything and ambles along. Today, we walked and jogged and played, and then he gave me a kiss when we got back to his run. I gave him one treat for being so well behaved. A guy who volunteers said that Buddy pulls him around, but I don’t understand it because he’s so easy to walk for me. Maybe he’s easy on me because he knows he could pull me over if he wanted to!

BB and Princess Jasmine

In Dog Walking, Uncategorized on May 14, 2009 at 9:13 pm

tonight4tonight5

My dear friend Crystalee came over this evening, and I took her to the WPA Human Society. We looked at the cats and bunnies and dogs and I walked two more. I am such a sucker for those dogs, I wish I could stay there and walk all of them, but I get kind of warn out after a few. I walked Big Buddy again and my little princess Jasmine. Crys took some pictures on her phone, also.

Buddy through the grass

Buddy through the grass

They were both very playful this evening. Buddy had to smell and explore everything, but when I got down on his level, he started kissing me and put his paws up on my shoulders. Crys said he could easily knock me over, and I said he could really pull me if he wanted to on the walks, also, but he’s a gentle guy. He has the cutest face, and I looked closer and his eyes are a beautiful shade of green!

Princess Jasmine

Princess Jasmine

Jasmine was going crazy over treats, and ready to sit for them. She also wanted to run a little bit and burn off that puppy energy, and play. Jazzi also rolled over on her back so I could rub her belly. So sweet! We stopped in the chill-out room for a cold pnut butter & kibble kong.

Meet Muffin, Ricki Divas, and Ginger; More King and Hercules

In Dog Walking, Uncategorized on May 14, 2009 at 12:58 pm
The King and I, Day 3

The King and I, Day 3

I had to go make a deposit at the bank today, and the Humane Society is right across the street so I couldn’t resist stopping to check on King. He’s really coming along, so playful now and loving treats. He layed up against me on his back again so I could rub his belly. So sweet! And he is so easy to loose leash walk. He really is a special boy. Whoever gets him will be very lucky.

King

King

I walked Hercules, who I walked before. He is one of the Super Seven Pit Bulls, and is an awesome, energetic, friendly dog. He was so happy to see all of the people, a lot of the staff was  just coming in and he had to greet all of them exuberantly. We were on the go the whole time, so I didn’t get any new pictures of Herc. He has more in his bag of tricks though, and can shake hands! I didn’t even tell him to, but he wanted a treat, so he tried it. Then I saw the short video on his page where he is doing it on command. Very good job, Hercules!

Short Video of Hercules

After Herc, I walked two dogs together. I had never done this before here, but figured I could handle it since they are in the same run, small, and relatively old. It was fine walking them together, but next time I will do it separately because Muffin wanted to keep going when Ricki was tired. It was too hard to take pictures with two leashes, though, so I only got one of each. They were really nice, friendly, happy dogs. Ricki got right back into her bed when we got back, but Muffin was still raring to go.

I thought I was done after that (again, not usually the case), but I decided to walk one more and Ginger was sitting so quietly and well behaved and looking up at me, so I decided to take her. I was going through the list of the dogs who are known to be House Broken and trying to get to them first so they didn’t have to hold it so long. The best way to describe Ginger’s appearance is like a tiger. She is an orangey brown with black patterns over top like stripes. She kind of moves like a tiger too, but was much gentler. haha. Very sweet, friendly, girl. Very easy to walk, loved walking and didn’t want to bother with treats.
